Guide to Fall 2007 Eyewear: The Conundrum
-hint, step away from the dark emo glasses.

My dad has always been at me (& scolded me) to protect my eyes- citing that good eyesight is the most important thing to maintain; take a 10 minute break every 30 minutes of studying/internet/TV, etc.. Designers must believe that to some extent as well, given the loads of ads in magazines for eyewear-- which are normally just brand filler ads (I believe) in between seasons.

However, it feels as if fashionable/stylish eyeglasses are becoming extinct-- at least among the younger set. More and more people are correcting their vision through contact lenses. Not many people I know wear glasses...mostly boys. And if they, girls included, do-- they either play it safe with plain, thin silver frames, or get one of the multiple "stylish" variations on the thick "emo" glasses. Yes, you know the ones I'm talking about.

Because, face it, that seems to be the only style save for 40's/50's "cat eye" and "half-rimmed"/"un-rimmed". Of which the latter is mostly for looking like you're not even wearing glasses, but can be cute depending on any whimsical frame details. I should know, cause I've had both: silver, half-rimmed cat eyes and two emos-- one with blue on the interior and a Jill Stuart, a yellow interior with crystals on the side (which I currently wear). My Jill Stuarts are really cute, but they look cuter on the coffee table than on me, :P. I normally wear them for driving and class.




I remember in Jr. High and high school, girls would be in the bathroom poking their reddening eyes out with contacts-- because in Jr. High, glasses were nerdy, and because in high school, it's just much easier and your face is much clearer without them. Oh, and I was the girl recoiling in the corner.

However, I've also had my moments where I've been leaning toward contacts. I do believe that natural beauty is the best and glasses can weigh down on that (well, they have a lot of personality, can take over your face and can change your whole look- good or bad) if you're the type that would have to wear glasses all the time. And *cough, glasses are not so good for parties...that's how I lost my silver half-rimmed cat eyes, shh* And it's kind of annoying to simultaneously switch between cute non-prescription sunglasses and glasses when the sun is out. I have to sacrifice my sight for protection.

We took my brother to the eye doctor a few days ago though and I think I may put off getting contacts for a bit longer. Yes, right when I think there's no way glasses are going to go past the overbearing emo frames or that the frames designer ads only seem to suit those of us with modelesque (is that a word?) features, I find tiny proof and the perfect solution amongst the rows of frames that says otherwise. And for those of you that have been wearing strictly contacts for a couple years now, it might be worth your while to invest in a pair of frames to pull out at times to transform your look (in a good way).

So all the frames are wacky or dark? Well, the only logical solution is to brighten it up for fall! Not like, neon green bright, but colors to lighten up the face, or vibrant colors that'll stand out against your hair color. I especially fell in love with these D & G thick white frames (I'm imagining a girl with a high, slick-backed ponytail)-- a bright spin on the typical dark emo ones. Oh, and typically, dark frames really REALLY seem to crowd in on ethnic girls who aren't lighter skinned. White glasses for fall are an everyman's or everywoman's frame. I tried them on and I lovedddd them. Plus, they really stand out against my black hair.

There was also another pair that stood out to me, that I didn't dare try on because they were fixed high on a pedestal behind a glass case like in a museum or something. They were these silver half-rimmed Pradas which were light, very non-intrusive on the face - slick but normal - but then provided a zap of color in the form of a bright red on the arms of the frames. It would also stand out great against my hair, but not interfere with my face's Asian skin tone. So, hence my theory that fall is also great for arms with vivid colors that stand out against the color of the hair instead of crowding the face. Simple but grand solution for glasses that'll complement your face (non-intrusive) and your hair (the arms' stand-out pop of color).



Of course, I doubt all of you have black, or if I want to be fancy, raven, hair. So, I took a color wheel and started trying to figure out which vibrant colors would go best with which hair tones: black with a vibrant red, brunettes with a eye-catching violet, redheads with a richer purple (see LL on the right- who actually looks good in it), and blondes with a bright cobalt blue (which is actually a pretty hot color now) or even a bright baby blue (but for spring). And of course, white is the everyman's/woman's frame.

Now if I can cut back on my clothes and shoes spending, I might be able to muster up some cash for the D & G's or the Pradas...(well, in my dreams).

__Oh, and about last Friday's A Model Life___

For those of you A Model Life watchers, (I haven't forgotten!) I did watch Friday's weight issues episode. I love Lucia and I hate that they're pressuring her so much about her weight even though the nutritionist said she's the healthiest of the bunch. I'm still pulling for her. Other than that though, unfortunately, the episode wasn't very interesting : ( I can only conclude that either the producers are editing out any altercations and bad personality bits between the girls or American girls are just more rowdier, catty (ANTM models), and more antagonistic (lol!). I know I wouldn't mind a little bit of excitement...but I believe I'm going to continue watching it because A. I want to see how my two favs, Lucia and Valeria are doing, and B. It's a good show to watch while exercising. ;)

I Am a Plastic Bag DIY.

So, everyone's heard of these bags, right? Of course you have!


Well, I'm doing this post because: 1. The blue US ones are going on sale in the tri-state area tommorrow, the 18th (woo-woo!) 2. And even though Anya Hindmarch's bag has been over-hyped and undergone publicity overkill, it still brings into light an important issue regarding the impact of plastic bags on the environment and they take hundreds of years to decompose.

Unfortunately, some who have been lucky to get these are just toting around the supercheap bags because they're designer-- instead of using them to replace plastic bags (take it to the market, etc).

SooOoOoo I did a DIY regarding getting some more mileage out of plastic bags that you might just have lying around!


Haha :) well they're not just for children, of course. It just sounded cute saying that. Anyway, why would anyone want a smock? Wellll, in case you need to do some light, but messy, indoor work. AKA baking, painting... And it's a good as a last-minute usage if you need protection for your outfit. :P

I entered the one above in a "Plastic Ain't My Bag" photo contest I found online! Thought it would be fun. To look at the other entries (and vote for mine if you like :P) visit here.

Alright! All you need is one plastic bag and a scissor, which after it's used, can be thrown away (hey, you got some more mileage out of it). It's incredibly easy and does a good job. The only con might be that the rustling is a bother-- in which case you can use a thinner, not as "crunchy", plastic bag.

And there's only two steps:

1. Flatten the bag right and a make slit cut on each side all the way down.
2. Pull it open and once more, flatten it out.

...and that's it! And if you widen out the strap where it's cinched (on some bags) it makes a cute little kind of perpendicular cap sleeve (if that makes sense...).



Then there's a second option, if you just need a quick coverage on the top. But in this one, you don't use all of the bag.

1. Cut along where the dotted lines are...and voila!

I decided to wear pink shorts...so you couldn't really see the little "coat-tails" so I outlined them. Pretty cute for a plastic bag, huh?

The Last Word...or rather, the Last Pictures

So, I'm kind of addicted to ShopStyle.com now, a site I mentioned in one of my previous posts. I had put together these outfits, inspired by some of my favorite vintage photographs I picked out. I think there's a lot to take away from these old photographs.

Plus, you know, in case you want to wear something like these outfits yourself. ;)

For most of the items in the outfits, I especially picked non-leather, non-suede alternatives. There's just two items (LV flats & a bag) with leather that I had to work around (besides, remember it's the idea that counts in these outfits).

Gladiator Woman [Louise Dahl-Wolfe]



Braided details, high waisted full skirts, and a selection of cruelty-free gladiator shoes (ironic?) completes this strong look.



Contemporary Louise Dahl-Wolfe



I tried to make it a more contemporary look, which wasn't hard since it already looks like an ad in a department store. I could imagine Scarlett Johansson as the model so I paired it with some Louis Vuitton flats (of course, these do contain leather-- it's the idea that counts) seeing as she's the LV campaign girl.



Hirsch 1939 [The Art of Vogue]



This was the best look-a-like bag I could find (however, in real life it does contain leather) to the one in the picture so I worked the colors around that instead. Blue and yellow are just as bold primary colors as red, anyway. Although red would've been nice...



And then found a red striped bag so I thought I'd redo the look I did before and give it another go :)



The Velvet Shoe [Denney, 1950- Unseen Vogue]



The photo revolves mostly around the shoe, of course...but alas no pink velvet shoe to be found so I went with the next best option. This girl's studded with big jewelry so I picked a bunch of lookalikes out-- in case you want to recreate the look but want to opt for more affordable options.

Any of those dresses seem to work. Vivienne Tam's has a black net detail near the neckline like the net headwrap in the picture. Personally I would go for the softer pinks. Either way, there's the net details in the Pout cosmetics ;)

This photo evokes more of a bedroom boudoir so that's why I included the lingerie if that's what is.

Clutches are optional, but any of those can be paired with the total outfit you end up mixing and matching.

Leaping in the Rain [Woman in the Mirror, Avedon 1957]



I couldn't find that dark brown colored, open collared coat on ShopStyle (limited retailers)-- next best option was this white trapeze coat, and then these open, assymetrical collared trenchs.

Couldn't really find a pillbox hat either (never understood how those stayed on one's head) but found the next best shaped hats. Paired with some dark closed toe pumps for leaping across the street, and a sleek umbrella- and you're 1957, Paris.



Old yet Fresh [Louise Dahl-Wolfe]



Jacquard, brocade, tapestry, call it whatever you want, this old fashion photograph does it justice.

The model has on blue and gold jewelry, and a pale yellow sheath dress underneath. The overall idea of this outfit is nice too-- can work well with white.

Then you've got the shiny, pale printed coat. A more modern way to go can be a long metallic one.

Paired with some red lip, and you can carry out a subtle jacquard on jacquard.

Like I said before, I love love LOVE this look. The graphic black and white dot print really pops when paired with bright, colorful flowery accessories.



And ...now I better return those library books. I actually had a nightmare the other day that they were so far past due and I owed like hundreds of dollars.
